A Kashmiri lacquered papier-mâché box

Decorative papier-mâchéof this type was a speciality of Kashmir and was made for both the local and European markets.

This box is decorated with bands of intricate floral and foliate interlaces. It bears an interesting inscription at the back reading: “Ganemede Srinagar Kashmir” which indicates that it could have been made by Ganemede, renowned papier-mâché makers and dealers from Srinagar.
It would make a great addition to a box collection and could be used as a jewellery box.
