The epic poem of the Ramayana (Ram‘s career’) has provided a mass of narratives for Indian miniature painters. It is believed to be the work of mythical sage Valmiki, and said to have been composed between the 4th century BC and the 3rd century AD.
The present scene depicts the coronation of Ram and Sita at their return to Ayodhya, after Ravana’s defeat.
Ram and Sita are seating in the centre, flanked by their companions. Among them Ram’s brother Lakshman (depicted in blue) and Hanuman, the monkey god, kneeling at the front.
